I have been to Washington, D.C. many times over the years but have only recently begun photographing the capital of the United States. This is a "federal city" on the north bank of the Potomac River, formed from land donated by the states of Maryland and Virginia. The exact location was selected by George Washington. In the Compromise of 1790, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson accepted an agreement by which the federal government would pay each state's remaining Revolutionary War debts in order to construct the national capital in the southern United States.
